Implementation of Operational Safety Tool for International Mining Company

Problem Statement

IMC aimed to align its operations with its new Health and Safety Policy to achieve zero fatalities, serious injuries, and occupational illnesses. The challenge was operationalizing the OST program at a complex mine site with multiple contractors and transitioning from a project to an operational environment.

Goal

To integrate the OST into the RM site, ensuring effective communication at all operational levels while addressing unique challenges related to contractors and site transitions.

Result

  1. Improved Safety Communication: OST facilitated upward, downward, and lateral safety communication.
  1. Adoption and Training: Supervisors trained in new safety practices, and crew concerns were transparently addressed through actionable feedback loops.
  1. Process Optimization: Enhanced meeting wiring and refined processes for safety observations and crew concern documentation.
  1. Audit Findings: The second OST audit showed significant improvements in safety observation processes and information collection.
  1. Sustained Practices: Daily management meetings provided timely feedback loops and escalations, maintaining relevance and efficiency.

PACE supported an international mining company in implementing the Operational Safety Tool (OST) to enhance structured safety communication across its operations, driving the company’s zero-fatality safety commitment.

“The OST program has transformed how we approach safety communication, ensuring every concern is heard, addressed, and acted upon effectively. The structured approach has created a safer, more transparent working environment for all teams.”
